Reflections on an                     Antebellum Christmas

The Lower Shore Performing Arts Company and the Costen House Museum are proud to present Reflections on an Antebellum Christmas.  A collection of stories and memories from personal journals and articles written during that time.

“For a nation torn by civil war, Christmas in the 1860’s was observed with conflicting emotions. Nineteenth-century Americans embraced Christmas with all the Victorian trappings that had moved the holiday from the private and religious realm to a public celebration. Christmas cards were in vogue, carol singing was common in public venues, and greenery festooned communities north and south. Christmas trees stood in places of honor in many homes, and a mirthful poem about the jolly old elf who delivered toys to well-behaved children captivated Americans on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line.”

                                       Dr. Isaac Costen

Quilling Class, FEBRUARY 10, 2024, 1pm

$25 per student

We are holding a paper quilling class at the Costen House Museum for up to 10 students on Saturday, February 10th beginning at 1:00 and will last about two hours. The class is open to adults and children age 12 and older.

Quilling is the art of creating decorative designs from thin strips of curled paper. This age-old art of paper quilling has been around since the Renaissance, during that time, French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. The paper most commonly used was strips of paper trimmed from the gilded edges of books. These gilded paper strips were then rolled to create the quilled shape.

Students will learn to make some simple shapes out of narrow strips of paper and then attach the shapes together to make flowers or other designs. These designs will be glued to note cards which the students will bring home with them after class. All supplies will be provided.

The cost is $25 for each student and must be paid in advance and no later than February 3rd. Payment can be made using our PAYPAL.ME link below or by personal check sent to the Costen House Museum, PO Box 430, Pocomoke City, MD 21851.
